Lukovska Spa: The real family spa

Lukovska Spa: The real family spa

Things to do - general

Lukovska Spa is the ultimate health resort, place for recovery, and a tourist center in the eastern part of Kopaonik, in Kuršumlija municipality.

Lukovska Spa is best known for its greatest number of natural springs and a greatest number of natural mineral waters, it is also the highest Spa in Serbia, which is the main reason why it is called an air spa.

A prominent and acknowledged Russian and our baleologist, Alexej Scerbakov (1858-1944), said that Lukovo is one of the best spas and climate stations.

He compared the therms of Lukovska Spa with the therms which are very known in the world, such as Noenar in Germany and Šanov Toplice in Czech Republic, since they are able to ‘treat a large number of indications.’

“Lukovska Spa is a real family spa “where father would treat his rheumatism, mother some female disease and child improve its blood smear and respiratory problems.”

Healing waters of Lukovska Spa have been used since olden days and people have been attracted to its healing powers to use it for healing and some other purposes.

At the upper Spa, there are remains of plumbing pipes, and buildings from Roman ages, which tells us that the Romans have been using the place for healing purposes from time immemorial, and also had their habitat there. The settlement also existed during Serbian medieval Age, and which is shown through medieval established buildings, as well as a church place od St. Giurgie, and the remains of some old mining sites.

Some Kruševac records No 567, mention Lukova Spa in 1775/1776 year, and a public restroom – hamam was build in the seventies of the eighteen century.

At the time of a younger Age of the Turks, Lukovska Spa became desolate, middle Ages heritage became demolished, and the woods covered previous healing place. After Serbian-Turkish conflicts Lukovska Spa regains its previous fame, and gained more and more importance.

The spa managed to accomplish its true development about 10 years ago by building Kopaonik Hotel, together with therapeutic-medicinal block, and in the last year first well-known hotel “Jelak”, also with medicinal-therapeutic block, was built.

The main factors for healing and recreation in the Spa are thermal waters and healing mud, of course combined with the natural beauties, rarities and the climate of this area.

Thermal waters of Lukovska Spa

Warm and natural water of Lukovska Spa, appear in shattered springs, in the narrow zone, which is about 400 m wide.

Lukovska Spa is well know about its greatest number (37) warm springs, which temperature ranges between 22 and 65 C degrees, which increases its temperature of water in the river for 1.5 C degrees.

It is estimated that from these springs, about 100 l/s of water goes away, which may be compared to the springs of Vranjska Spa.

Its offshoots are placed at both sides of Štav River as well as in the river bed itself, which makes it hard to capture and measure. Two types of springs stand out and those are: West, which is known as Upper Spa, with 20 natural wells and drill holes, and eastern Lower Spa, with 13 natural wells and two drill holes.

The origin of mineral waters

Atmosphere waters, the snow the rain plunge and at certain heights they warm up, enrich with gases, and start moving upwards along faults, at the contact of serpentine and hydroquarcites and limestones.

These waters, upon their outpour to the surface of the ground deposit bigar and iron compounds, so that their immediate surface is covered with dark -yellow – green subsidence (Dimitrijevic N., 1875).

Great amounts of bigre around warm springs, especially at the lower Spa, around hotel Kopaonik, are pointing to their frequent movement, removal, that is their clogging and reappearance at another location. This points out that the number of well bounds is changeable, as well as their physical properties (bounty, temperature, composition), and at the same time, their balenological properties. (Macejka M. 2010)

Properties of thermal waters

Waters that belong to the warmest spring bounds, usually possess the same chemical structure: hydrocarbon – magnesium – calcium type, in which there is almost equal presence of cations.

Special attention attracts carbon-acids waters of a new bathroom Šljivak”, which are, according to the locals the most healing ones. They are coming out from the depositing materials, followed by gases, amounting about 1/5 ls, which temperature ranges from 32 – 48 C degrees, a Ph 6,7. Next to the restroom “Šljivak” at the upper Spa, there is the so called Milutin’s bathroom, where the water is very similar to the water in the “Šljivik”.

Local residents used to wash their laundry, scold swine and poultry, while huge amounts of thermal waters spills into the river.

Significance of thermal waters

Greatest balneological value to the spa waters are given by the gases carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.

Very important characteristics of carbon-acid waters is that when applied externally it facilitates the conditions of the work of heart and blood vessels.

Drinking this carbon-acid water is very useful for treatment of digestion organs diseases.

The greatest importance of the waters of the Lukovska spa for recovery and rehabilitation is its very positive effect in treatment of rheumatism and rheumatoid diseases.

Hydrotherapy is a healing technique with the external application of water in its liquid state, no matter if we talk about a river, lake, pool or mineral water.

Lukovska Spa is very well known for hydrotherapy, hydro-aero-jono-therapy and healing mud.

Air or sun bath are usually combined with various water procedures, which are, at the beginning held with the temperature of the water very close to the temperature of comfort (33-34 degrees C). with the aim of strengthening the immune system, temperature of water decreases to 30-28, for steal organism using showers to 20-24 degrees C, and for very healthy to 18 degrees. After air or sunny baths, one should also predict baths in water. It unites in itself a complex of very complex influence of the temperature of water , salt and organic matter. (Macejka M, 2010).

The main stimulative factor is the temperature of the water. Exchange of the heat between the body and water have great influence to the lowering of the temperature of the body, which degree of stimulation depends on the physiological properties of organism and the difference between the temperature of body and water. If the temperature of the body is lower, the loss heat per unit of the surface of the skin.

With its movement, the water poses great pressure on the body, and does hydromassage, at the same time, which is much more active than the common massage, since it improves the state of skin, as well as its elasticity. Dissolved salt in water have irritating effect to the receptors of skin, even though their influence is much more intense in pool that fills with mineral water.

Hydroaerojonotherapy is based on baleoelectric effect, which appears with natural or artificial dispersion of water, so in water apart of hydrojones, there are aerojones.

Hydrojones usually have reflective effect, using the receptors of higher breathing ways onto oxidaction-reductive processes and the dynamic of the main processes of the matter exchange in the organism.

It also affects very positively the function of glands, nervous and cardiovascular systems, it stimulates protective and immunological reactions of the organism, it can be used in the treatment of hyperthonic diseases of the first and second degrees, artherosclerosis, rheumatoid flaw of heart, chronic gastritis, beginning phase of stomach ulcer and duodenum ulcer.

Healing mineral mud (pelioid)

At the upper spa there are two mud sources in which the visitors, by bath and application of mud heal rheumatism and skin diseases.

After WWII, improvised bathrooms have been built, which have been carried away by flood, by Stavska River. Recently, A.D. “Planika” remade these wells into open pools. In the healing parts of the two existing hotels, mineral water mixes with the surrounding ground, and in that way the healing mud is being created in an artificial way.

Climate of Lukovska Banja (Spa)

Climate of Lukovska Spa is moderately-continental. Formation of this type of climate was influenced by the various factors: geographical position, circulation of air accumulation, specific relief features, etc. Lukovska Banja (Spa) is one of the most southern spas in Serbia, so the daylights during the winter there are a bit longer, and in summer shorter.

The regular circulation of air accumulation has the special significance for climate and weather in Lukovska Banja (Spa). Continental polar air dominates during the wintertime, and in summer continental polar and continental tropical airs are exchanging. Rotation of polar maritime and polar continental air is characteristic for the interim period. Maritime polar air brings cloudy weather and rainfalls, and continental polar air brings mostly clear weather or slightly cloudy weather. The warmest month in Lukovska Banja (Spa) is July.

The average annual temperature of the spa is 8.7 – 8.8 °C, so this means that it is one of the coldest spas in Serbia. This gives it one great advantage. The average air temperatures above 18 °C in Lukovska Banja (Spa) are only in July and August, which means that the summer is cooler than in any other spa in Serbia. As the average annual temperature in most of the cities during the summertime is above 22 °C, Lukovska Banja (Spa) can be a real getaway for relaxation and recreation.

In balneology, the days when the average daily temperatures are between 15 and 20 °C are accepted as agreeable for people to spend time in the natural environment. There are 54 days in a year like this one in Lukovska Banja (Spa), and they are in a period from June 25th and August 17th. It is considered that the most convenient period for the daily trips is the period when the average air temperature is higher than 12 °C. That period lasts for 153 days in Lukovska Banja (Spa) – from May 3rd till October 2nd.

Winds represent a great influence on the climate conditions of a particular place, and their special significance is even greater in the spa regions, as they have great influence on healing and recreation of spa visitors. The northwest wind is very frequent in Lukovska Banja (Spa), although its strength is decreased by the relief, since the spa settlement is protected by hills from that side. Due to the location of the spa settlement in the small, well enclosed valley, in Lukovska Banja (Spa) one can notice more frequent appearance of the quiet weather.

The periodical winds with half-a-day frequency – valley winds and mountainous winds - have a great significance for all the visitors of Lukovska Banja (Spa). The air in Lukovska Banja (Spa) circuits along the mountain sides during the day – valley wind, and during the night, and in morning hours, colder and heavier mountain air comes down from the surrounding areas into the spa valley – mountainous wind.

These winds are much more expressed in the summertime, especially during the clear, quiet weather, when the greatest differences in the air pressure between the bottom of the valley and the surrounding hills are created. These are, in fact, breezes and light winds which act refreshing on the visitors and stimulate the stay during the summertime in Lukovska Banja (Spa).

It is true that the various types of falls, such as rain, hail, fog and snow are present in Lukovska Banja (Spa), and the most important of all of them is snow - for the development of winter tourism.

The formation of the snow cover in the area of Kopaonik on average lasts 5 to 29 days. So, the formation of the snow cover in Lukovska Banja (Spa) starts on November 26th, and the formed snow cover lasts till March 30th, which means that there are 125 days for winter sport in this region.
